30 Aug
Summary
- US approves $8.5B Patriot air-defense system sale to Denmark
- Denmark plans to transfer Patriot missiles to support Ukraine
- Netherlands also buying Patriots to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses

In a significant move to support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression, the United States has approved the sale of multiple Patriot air-defense systems and other weapons to its NATO ally, Denmark. The $8.5 billion deal, which was approved by the US State Department, includes six Patriot missile launchers, radar and guidance systems, as well as corresponding missiles.
Denmark, along with other NATO members, aims to supply Ukraine with advanced weapons systems to strengthen its defenses against Russian attacks. Since Denmark does not currently operate Patriot systems, it must purchase them from the US. The Netherlands has also recently acquired Patriot missiles to further bolster Ukraine's air defenses.
Kiev has repeatedly requested Patriot systems from Western allies in recent months, as the country seeks to better protect its cities from Russian airstrikes. With the US reluctant to fund additional weapons deliveries to Ukraine, NATO partners are stepping up to acquire US-made systems and transfer them to Ukrainian forces.
