Summary
- Russian general seriously injured on front line
- Underwent amputation of arm and leg after Ukrainian strike
- Highly decorated commander known for protecting his troops
According to reports, General Esedulla Abachev, the deputy commander of Russia's Northern group of forces, was seriously wounded while on the front lines of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The incident occurred last month, on July 18th, 2025.
Abachev, who hails from Russia's Dagestan region, was struck during a Ukrainian attack on a Russian military convoy in the Kursk region of western Russia. Ukrainian military intelligence has stated that Abachev had an arm and a leg amputated as a result of his injuries, and is currently receiving treatment at one of the country's top military medical facilities in Moscow.
Dagestani leader Sergei Melikov praised Abachev, describing him as a "combat general and a wise commander who always tries to protect his personnel, sometimes neglecting his own safety." Abachev was a highly decorated officer, having received the prestigious Gold Star of the Hero of Russia award for his actions during the current war.
The loss of such a senior and experienced commander is a significant blow to Russia's military efforts in Ukraine. At least a dozen Russian generals have been killed since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. As the conflict continues, the toll on Russia's leadership continues to mount.
