On Friday, a tragic incident occurred near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, where an Army Agniveer lost his life, and two other soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion. The incident took place as Agniveer Lalit Kumar, part of the 7 JAT Regiment, was on patrol as part of area-domination exercises with his colleagues.
The explosion occurred in the rain-lashed zone, where the stretch along the LoC is dotted with landmines as part of an Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS). According to official sources, a few stray mines are sometimes washed away by rain and go off accidentally on contact.
Havaldar Gajindera Singh and Subedar Hari Ram, the two other soldiers injured in the incident, were airlifted to the Army Hospital in Udhampur, around 300 km away. The Army's White Knight Corps paid tribute to Agniveer Lalit Kumar, who made the "supreme sacrifice," and expressed their support for the bereaved family.
