Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant on Thin Ice: Only One Power Line Remains
20 Feb
Summary
- Sole external power line remains for Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
- Backup line failed over a week ago due to alleged military activity.
- Plant needs external power to prevent nuclear material meltdown.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest, is currently operating on its single remaining external power line. This critical situation arose after a backup line, Ferrosplavna-1, failed on February 10, reportedly due to military activity.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitors confirmed the plant now relies solely on the Dniprovska power line for external power. While the plant is not generating electricity, it requires this external power to maintain cooling for its nuclear material and avert a potential meltdown.
Both Russia and Ukraine have previously accused each other of actions that could jeopardize nuclear safety at the plant. This is not the first time the plant has faced power challenges; its two external lines have gone down previously, leading to reliance on diesel generators for extended periods.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that monitors are seeking details on the damage but face security restrictions preventing access to the plant's switchyard. Control over the Zaporizhzhia plant remains a significant point of contention in ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
