Yemen's Children Starve on Leaves Amidst Aid Gaps

Many families in a remote pocket of northern Yemen are resorting to feeding their starving children boiled vine leaves, a sour green paste, as food scarcity intensifies. International aid agencies have expressed alarm and surprise at the extent of the suffering in the Aslam district, where health centers are overwhelmed with emaciated children. Officials report at least 20 child deaths from starvation in the province this year, with the actual number likely higher.

The worsening hunger in Aslam, a district with a population of 75,000 to 106,000, highlights significant gaps in the international aid system, which is already strained. Humanitarian officials warn that the spread of hunger is outpacing efforts to save lives amidst the ongoing civil war. In response to the Associated Press's inquiry, aid groups have launched an investigation and are dispatching over 10,000 food baskets to the affected district.

Hajjah province, where Aslam is located, recorded 17,000 cases of severe acute malnutrition in the first six months of this year, surpassing previous annual records. The conflict has crippled Yemen's ability to feed its population, with approximately 8.4 million people relying on aid to survive, a number projected to increase significantly due to the currency's declining value.

Aid distribution in Aslam is hampered by various factors, including a prioritization of displaced persons over local communities and alleged favoritism by local Houthi authorities. Many residents, particularly those from the marginalized 'Muhammasheen' community, struggle to access aid due to lack of influence with officials. The main health center in Aslam lacks basic resources like pediatricians and electricity, relying on flashlights at night.
