Medals and logbooks belonging to World War Two hero RAF Flying Officer Leslie Valentine are set to be auctioned next week in Scarborough. Valentine, then 24, flew his Boston bomber at a perilous 50ft over the Normandy landing beaches on June 6, 1944.
His mission was to lay smoke, creating a protective screen for Allied forces against enemy fire. Despite facing heavy shelling and being shot at, Valentine successfully returned to his base in Hampshire unharmed, a remarkable feat given the dangers of his low-altitude run.
The historic memorabilia, including his logbooks, pilot notes, and photographs, were offered for auction by his son, Dudley, who wishes for them to be preserved by a collector. The auction is scheduled for October 1.
