USS Ford Suffers Fire, Heads to Crete Port

The U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford is expected to make a temporary port call in Souda Bay, Crete, after a fire broke out aboard the vessel. This incident occurred during the ship's ninth month of deployment. Nearly 200 sailors required treatment for smoke-related injuries following the fire in the main laundry area.
The blaze took hours to bring under control and affected approximately 100 sleeping berths. One service member was airlifted for treatment. Despite the incident, U.S. officials initially stated the ship's propulsion remained unaffected and it was fully operational. The Ford, the newest and largest aircraft carrier, carries over 5,000 crew members and more than 75 aircraft.
