The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on a network of eight individuals and four entities, accusing them of recruiting former Colombian military personnel to participate in Sudan's protracted civil war. This network reportedly funnels skilled fighters to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group currently clashing with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023. The recruited Colombians allegedly offer crucial tactical and technical skills, serving in roles such as infantry, artillery operators, and drone pilots.
The Treasury stated that the RSF has been actively recruiting hundreds of these former military personnel since September 2024. These fighters have allegedly aided the RSF in significant military actions, including the capture of El Fasher in North Darfur, during which alleged war crimes, such as mass killings and sexual violence, were committed. The sanctions are intended to cut off this vital source of external support for the RSF, thereby diminishing their capacity to perpetrate violence against civilians.
