Ukraine's StarGate Drone: Battlefield Evacuation Reimagined
16 Oct
Summary
- StarGate drone can evacuate wounded soldiers from kill zones.
- The drone has a 15-kilometer one-way range for critical rescues.
- Each StarGate system is estimated to cost at least $US50,000.

Ukraine's defense technology company SkyFall has developed the StarGate, an innovative aerial medical evacuation drone designed to operate in hazardous battlefield conditions. This new technology offers a crucial solution for rescuing wounded soldiers from 'kill zones' that are often inaccessible to ground vehicles due to constant drone and artillery threats. The StarGate drone boasts a 15-kilometer one-way range, enabling it to reach critically injured troops deep within enemy territory.
The development of StarGate was directly inspired by urgent requests from frontline commanders seeking safer and faster evacuation methods. Traditional ground robot evacuations can take hours, a delay that is often fatal for severely wounded soldiers. StarGate aims to drastically reduce this time, with a cruising speed of 65km/h and a top speed of 105km/h, and can be prepared for flight in approximately 10 minutes.
Navigating electronic warfare remains a significant challenge, but StarGate incorporates dual communication channels (Starlink and L-Link) and AI-driven systems to maintain control even when GPS signals are disrupted or jammed. The drone is also designed for resilience, capable of operating in adverse weather conditions and even continuing flight if one of its arms is lost. Front-line tests are currently underway to assess its combat reliability.
SkyFall estimates the cost of each StarGate system to be at least $US50,000, with plans to produce up to 1000 units per month by the end of 2026. While initial demonstrations are promising, frontline units require extensive evaluation to determine the drone's true success rate and impact on battlefield medical responses.
