Summary
- Ukrainian forces took a Russian position solely using robots and drones.
- Over 22,000 missions were completed by robot systems in three months.
- Ukraine aims to produce over 20,000 domestic ground robots this year.

Ukrainian forces have achieved a historic victory by capturing an enemy position without any human soldiers involved, relying solely on unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this groundbreaking operation, highlighting its significance as the first in the war to be executed entirely by automated systems. This advancement underscores Ukraine's commitment to reducing human casualties by employing technology in the most dangerous combat scenarios.
Over the past three months, Ukraine has utilized robot systems for over 22,000 missions, demonstrating a substantial shift towards robotic warfare. The nation is aggressively expanding its domestic production capabilities, aiming to manufacture over 20,000 ground robots this year, with an impressive 99% being domestically produced. These sophisticated UGVs are proving invaluable for assault operations, troop evacuation, and mine detection.
One notable UGV, the DevDroid TW 12.7, has showcased remarkable effectiveness. This robot, comparable in size to a ride-on lawnmower, is equipped with a .50-calibre M2 Browning machine gun and can be operated remotely or navigate using artificial intelligence. In one instance, a DevDroid successfully defended a frontline position against repeated Russian attacks for 45 days, deceiving enemy forces into believing they were engaging multiple human fighters.
Further demonstrating the impact of these robotic systems, footage emerged in January showing Russian soldiers surrendering to an armed Ukrainian combat robot. This incident, along with a previous all-robot offensive in March of last year that destroyed a Russian frontline position north of Kharkiv, solidifies the strategic advantage Ukraine gains from its advanced unmanned capabilities.
