Ukraine's Drones Cripple Russian Air Force

Operation Spiderweb, executed by Ukraine's SBU on June 1, 2025, is hailed as the world's most effective drone strike, showcasing advanced asymmetric warfare tactics. The operation involved 117 drones, smuggled in parts and assembled locally, targeting five Russian airfields.

Ukraine claims the strike destroyed or damaged 41 aircraft, inflicting an estimated $7 billion in military hardware losses, a stark contrast to Russia's reported $26 million damage. The deepest strike reached Belaya, Siberia, over 4300 km away.

This event, likened to Russia's Pearl Harbor, underscores the vulnerability of multi-billion-dollar military assets to low-cost drone swarms. Militaries globally, including the US, are re-evaluating their defenses against such threats.

Experts suggest a doctrine change may be necessary, as cheap, sophisticated drones could increasingly determine future conflicts, challenging traditional military superiority. The US is already investing in advanced counter-drone systems and hardened shelters.
