Ukraine's Drone 'Lava Lamp' Battles Russian Shaheds
17 Mar
Summary
- Ukrainian interceptor drones, resembling winged lava lamps, are key to defense.
- The STING drone, costing under $2,000, has downed over 3,000 Russian Shaheds.
- Middle Eastern clients and allies seek Ukrainian expertise against Iranian drones.

Ukrainian-made interceptor drones are emerging as a critical defense asset, challenging Russian aerial threats and attracting international interest. These innovative drones, developed by private firm Wild Hornets, offer a cost-effective solution compared to expensive Western air defense systems. The STING interceptor, for example, flies at speeds up to 280 km/h and has been instrumental in Ukraine's defense, downing more than 3,000 Russian Shahed drones since its deployment in June 2025.
The low cost, estimated at $2,000 or less per unit, makes these drones highly accessible, with over 10,000 produced monthly. Ukraine is now exploring potential exports, with Middle Eastern clients expressing interest in combating Iranian-made drones. Kyiv has indicated a willingness to share its expertise and technology, provided it receives reciprocal support.
Wild Hornets is already developing a second-generation model for even higher speeds to counter advanced drone technology. While prioritizing Ukraine's defense needs, the company is awaiting government approval for any export agreements. This strategic development positions Ukraine as a key player in counter-drone technology on the global stage.
