Russia targets Ukraine's heart: Books burn as nation's culture erased

Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine's cultural and literary infrastructure, causing significant destruction. A recent missile strike on a printing plant near Kyiv obliterated 1.3 million textbooks, representing 10% of the nation's schoolbook production for the upcoming academic year. This incident is part of a broader pattern targeting publishing houses and warehouses across Ukraine, resulting in the destruction of an estimated 12 million books.

Beyond printed materials, sites of historical and cultural importance have also been hit. Kyiv's Pochaina second-hand book market was devastated, alongside museums, art galleries, and film studios. The historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained damage, including a fire in its Dormition Cathedral. These attacks are viewed by Ukrainian officials as a deliberate effort to erase Ukrainian identity and cultural heritage.

Ukraine's Minister of Culture stated that over 1,900 pieces of heritage and 2,000 cultural institutions have been attacked. The Russian embassy, however, blames Ukraine's government for damage, alleging the use of cultural sites for military purposes. The ongoing attacks threaten Ukraine's publishing sector, highlighting the need for international support to preserve its literature and cultural legacy.
