An elderly woman and her daughters undertook a dangerous 15-kilometer trek to escape the besieged city of Lyman, Ukraine. The journey began with the 77-year-old, Nina Ivanova, and her family fleeing their destroyed home as Russian forces intensified attacks.
After their initial escape attempt failed due to impassable terrain, they recommenced their journey on foot at 3:40 a.m. The arduous 9-mile walk took over four hours, passing through destroyed landscapes and under the constant threat of drones and shelling.
Reaching the Siverskyi Donets River, they were assisted by Ukrainian soldiers who ferried them across via a rope-pulled boat. The survivors were then transported to an evacuation hub in Sloviansk, emotionally and physically scarred by their 'escape from hell'.
