Ukraine's Vines: Hope Blooms Amidst Russian Rockets
12 Jul
Summary
- Winemakers navigate unexploded Russian rockets and drone threats daily.
- The Molchanov family's winery survived shelling in their wine cellar.
- Despite war, Ukrainian wineries are expanding and innovating.

Ukrainian winemakers are demonstrating extraordinary resilience, tending to their vineyards amidst the ongoing conflict. The Molchanov family, whose Steppe Wines are grown organically on rich southern Ukrainian grasslands, faced direct threats, even working around an unexploded Russian rocket in their Chardonnay rows. Their wine cellar served as a bomb shelter during intense shelling near Mykolaiv in early March 2022.
Despite the apocalyptic threat of war and other agricultural challenges like pests and weather, the Ukrainian wine industry shows signs of growth. The Molchanovs plan to significantly increase their production from 10,000 bottles annually to 30,000-50,000 within a decade. This expansion mirrors a broader trend, with 82 craft wineries established since 2022, primarily in safer central and western regions.
Other winemakers face devastating losses. Olha Kashchenko, displaced from Kherson, now uses the Molchanovs' hub to produce wine, hoping to return to her destroyed vineyard. The historical Prince Trubetskoy winery in Kherson was looted, damaged, and ultimately obliterated by bombing earlier this year. Vineyard acreage has drastically reduced, from 68,000 hectares in 2014 to an estimated 15,000 currently, due to occupation and events like the Kakhovka dam destruction.
Beykush winery, situated near Mykolaiv, operates with a skeleton crew, its winemakers enduring frequent missile and drone attacks. Yet, they continue their work, planting new grape varieties like malbec in November 2022, believing in the future of winemaking. This dedication underscores a fundamental aspect of viticulture: to make wine is to believe in and cultivate the future, even under the most challenging circumstances.
