Ukraine Detains Citizens for Aiding Russian Starlink Use
25 Feb
Summary
- Two Ukrainians face life in prison for allegedly registering Starlink dishes for Russia.
- Suspects were recruited via Telegram and offered $30 per registered Starlink device.
- Ukraine's recent Starlink whitelist aims to block Russian military communications.

Two Ukrainian citizens are facing potential life sentences after being apprehended for allegedly aiding Russian occupying forces with Starlink satellite internet access. The Security Service of Ukraine announced the detentions on Tuesday, stating the individuals were recruited through the Telegram messaging app to register Starlink dishes for the Russian military.
These arrests follow Ukraine's recent implementation of a "whitelist" designed to block unregistered Starlink devices, specifically targeting Russian soldiers. The detained individuals, reportedly unemployed, accepted a payment of $30 per registered Starlink dish and were instructed on how to activate the equipment on Ukraine's official whitelist. Authorities presented seized mobile phones as evidence of communication with Russian operatives.
Starlink has become an essential tool for Ukrainian forces. However, Russian soldiers have also been procuring thousands of black market Starlink dishes to maintain communication capabilities within Ukrainian territory. In recent months, there have been reports of Russian forces equipping drones with Starlink technology for remote attacks deep inside Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government's move to implement the Starlink whitelist appears to have impacted Russian military operations by disrupting their communications. Despite this, Ukrainian authorities caution that Russia continues to seek recruits within Ukraine through online advertisements and by impersonating military personnel to gain access to the Starlink network.
