Summary
- UK has a new ground-based weapon to disable enemy satellites.
- The system jams satellite signals to deny adversaries' use.
- Developed at Porton Down, it's now operational with 3 Squadron.

Britain has introduced a novel, ground-based weapon designed to disable enemy satellites by jamming their signals. This undisclosed system, developed by scientists at Porton Down, is a significant addition to the UK's defense capabilities within the space domain. It operates by emitting signals that disrupt or spoof enemy communications, effectively neutralizing threats.
The capability is now integrated with the 3 Space Effects Squadron, a unit specifically established to counter hostile activities in orbit. This development comes as Chief of the Air Staff Sir Harv Smyth emphasizes that space has become a warfighting domain. He highlighted concerns over Russia's recent "dangerous" maneuvers in space, including unusual movements of military satellites and confirmed disruptions to GPS signals across Europe and Canada.
The UK's commitment to space defense is underscored by the founding of the UK Space Force in 2021. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stated that Britain must keep pace in the "new space race" as control of space will be critical this century. The new jamming system transitioned from a concept demonstrator to a full capability in roughly the last year, serving a deterrent purpose against potential adversaries.
