Trent Park House in Enfield, London, has opened to the public, revealing its clandestine role during World War II. Once a luxurious estate, the mansion was requisitioned as a surveillance centre by the War Office. Senior German prisoners of war were housed there, their conversations secretly monitored from a specially adapted basement.
This covert operation, involving German-speaking refugees, yielded crucial intelligence concerning German weapons programmes and atomic research. The full extent of this secret work remained hidden for over seven decades. Visitors can now tour the ground-floor rooms associated with its former owner, Sir Philip Sassoon, and the basement that housed the wartime listening operations.
The museum's history traces back to 1779. The house later hosted prominent figures during Sir Philip Sassoon's ownership, including Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin. During the war, miniature microphones were installed throughout the estate to capture prisoner discussions.
Known as the "Secret Listeners" operation, it utilized German refugees, many of them Jewish, who had fled Nazi persecution. These recruits served in the Pioneer Corps and later the Intelligence Corps. The intelligence gathered included details on German battle plans and the V1 and V2 weapons programme, and early accounts of the Holocaust.
The Trent Park Museum opened to the public on July 21, 2026. It is located within Trent Country Park, offering visitors a chance to explore both the historical house and its surrounding parkland. The museum's significance is noted as being on par with Bletchley Park.
