Spain Boosts Ceuta Security Amid New Migrant Breach Fears

Spain has heightened security in its North African enclave of Ceuta by deploying additional police and military personnel. This action follows online messages encouraging migrants to attempt another mass border crossing, just two weeks after a large influx on July 30th. During that incident, over 72,000 individuals entered Ceuta, with at least 96 fatalities reported.

Moroccan authorities have responded by strengthening security measures along their border with Ceuta and Melilla. They are actively monitoring social media for calls to cross and have pledged to prosecute organizers. Spain has also installed a maritime barrier and deployed over 500 extra police officers to manage the situation and deter future attempts.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that personnel will remain to restore normality and prevent repeats of the July events. Approximately 5,000 migrants are still in Ceuta, with many asylum cases being rejected. Spain intends to return those without a right to remain to Morocco, prioritizing vulnerable cases for special consideration.

Migrants who managed to reach Ceuta in the earlier rush shared their experiences, with some advising others against attempting similar crossings due to the dangers involved. They described the mass border rushes as organized events where numbers provided strength. Despite the risks, some felt attempting to reach Spain offered a better chance at building a future.
