South Sudan's Trauma: A Nation's Crisis Deepens

South Sudan is grappling with intensifying internal conflict, placing immense pressure on its trauma services. Juba Military Hospital, a key referral center, has seen a more than 50% increase in admissions during the first six months of this year compared to 2025. This surge is attributed to escalating clashes between government and opposition forces, as well as intercommunal violence across several states.

Doctors report that over 90% of patients arrive with severe gunshot or stab wounds, often to the chest, legs, or abdomen. The hospital has already treated four mass casualty incidents this year, defined by the arrival of over 15 patients from a single event. Surgeries are up 30%, consistently exceeding the department's capacity.

This dire situation is compounded by a deepening humanitarian crisis, fueled by climate shocks and the arrival of over 1.2 million returnees and refugees from Sudan. Simultaneously, global aid cuts are reducing available funding, further straining already fragile health infrastructure. Many remote clinics struggle with limited supplies and staff, and infected wounds are common due to exposure.

The increased workload is taking a severe toll on healthcare staff, who face overwhelming pressure and limited breaks. The challenges are immense, with a rising number of deaths and patients testing the resilience of the system. Attacks on humanitarian workers also pose a significant threat to aid delivery.
