The Sikh community in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province recently commemorated the 129th anniversary of the Battle of Saragarhi. The observance was held on Saturday in Saragarhi village, Hangu district, drawing Sikh leaders and community members from across Pakistan.
The historic battle occurred on September 12, 1897, where 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment made a last stand against approximately 10,000 Pashtun tribal fighters. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the soldiers, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, displayed extraordinary bravery, inflicting significant casualties before all were martyred.
The shrine at Prem Nagar, near Peshawar, serves as a memorial. Preparations have been announced for an international-level commemoration of the 130th anniversary next year. This event aims to further honor the courage of the 21 Sikh soldiers.
Meanwhile, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee also organized a separate religious gathering in Amritsar to mark the occasion.
