Putin Pitches Su-57: India Still Unsure
5 Jun
Summary
- Russia offers India joint development of advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jet.
- India seeks fifth-generation jets due to regional advancements and AMCA delays.
- India previously exited the FGFA program due to cost and technology concerns.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again proposed a joint venture for the development and manufacturing of the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet. This offer includes the potential transfer of critical defense technologies to India.
India is actively seeking fifth-generation fighter jets to counter the growing aerial capabilities of neighboring countries. The nation's own Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project is underway but is not expected to enter service until the mid-2030s.
Previously, India withdrew from an 11-year program to develop a stealth fighter jet in 2018. Disagreements over cost-sharing, technology sharing, and the Su-57's stealth capabilities led to India's exit.
Despite Russia's renewed interest and potential adjustments to terms aligned with India's 'Make in India' initiative, India's hesitation persists. Strategic calculations, including technology access, supply chain resilience, and diversification of defense partnerships, influence New Delhi's decisions, as it also deepens ties with Western nations like France and the United States.
