Romania Downs Russian Drones: NATO Shift?

Romania has adopted a more assertive stance against drone incursions into its airspace, recently shooting down three drones of Russian origin over three days. This marks a significant tactical shift from previously implemented measures such as scrambling fighter jets and constructing fallout shelters near the border. These actions come amid heightened Russian attacks near Ukraine's border and continued violations of Romanian territory.

Following these interceptions, Romania summoned Russia's ambassador in Bucharest and expelled a Russian diplomat, citing Russia's sole responsibility for the incidents. Drone fragments recovered confirmed their Russian origin, despite denials from the Russian embassy. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented evidence of the drones' Russian make to Moscow's envoy.

This change in Romanian policy, potentially influenced by a May drone incident in Galati that impacted civilians, signals a new determination to counter such provocations. Military analysts suggest this might reflect a broader shift within NATO, moving away from an "Allied decision not to respond with firepower" due to escalation fears.

Romanian officials emphasize that while they are now equipped and tactically prepared to eliminate drone threats, they do not intend to become directly involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine. The focus remains on defending national airspace without escalating into broader conflict.
