Summary
- Fitch Ratings placed Qatar's 'AA' sovereign rating on Negative Watch.
- Iran missile strikes damaged Ras Laffan LNG complex, wiping out 17% capacity.
- Ratings agency cited increased security risks following Iran war escalation.

Global ratings agency Fitch has downgraded Qatar's sovereign rating to 'AA' on Negative Watch, citing increased security risks stemming from the escalating conflict with Iran. The agency's decision comes after recent Iranian missile attacks hit the critical Ras Laffan Industrial City, a vital hub for Qatar's energy sector.
These strikes caused extensive damage to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex. QatarEnergy reported that 17% of the country's LNG capacity could be lost for up to five years as a direct result. Following the attack, Qatar declared force majeure on its entire LNG output, disrupting global energy supplies.
Fitch noted that while the eventual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz might boost oil and LNG prices, this would only partially compensate for the lost revenue. The agency indicated that if the conflict continues or escalates, Qatar could remain a target, further impacting its public finances and economic stability.
