Pilots Clash Over West Asia Flights Amid Rising Tensions

Renewed hostilities between the US and Iran have sparked a debate among Indian pilots regarding the safety of flights to West Asia. The Airline Pilots' Association of India (Alpa India) has formally requested the suspension of commercial flights to UAE destinations like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Alpa India cited explicit threats and ongoing military escalation in the region, warning of potential catastrophic consequences for civilian aviation due to missile risks, misidentification, and airspace restrictions.

Conversely, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), representing a larger membership, disagrees with the suspension call. FIP president C.S. Randhawa argued that Indian carriers should not cease operations while Middle Eastern airlines continue to fly. He noted past disruptions where Indian airlines faced restrictions while foreign carriers maintained services, leading to significant financial losses due to extended flight routes. The DGCA has not yet mandated any flight restrictions, historically opting for coordinated rerouting rather than blanket suspensions.
