Parris Island Drill Instructor Dies: Second Death in Two Months

Another drill instructor at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, has died. This marks the second such death within the past two months, adding to a concerning trend involving the high-profile Marines responsible for recruit training. The most recent casualty, Sgt. Darilyn C. Duong, 25, was discovered deceased at a residence on Friday. Her cause of death is presently under investigation, and no further details have been released by the Marines.

Sgt. Duong's death follows that of Sgt. Albert Haynes II, another drill instructor, who was found dead in a Florida hotel room in June. Sgt. Haynes was on temporary assignment at the time. The intensive nature of a drill instructor's role, involving 15-plus hour days and demanding schedules, has previously come under scrutiny. These recent fatalities occur against a backdrop of several other deaths at Parris Island since 2021, with varying reported causes.
