Anzac Day Long Weekends Coming to NSW
15 Feb
Summary
- New South Wales will get extra public holidays in 2026 and 2027.
- Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027.
- NSW has fewer public holidays than other mainland states.

New South Wales will provide an extra public holiday on the Monday following Anzac Day for the years 2026 and 2027. This decision comes as Anzac Day falls on a weekend in both these years. Previously, only Western Australia and the ACT offered a similar long weekend for this national day of remembrance.
Premier Chris Minns believes this additional holiday will not detract from Anzac Day's significance. Instead, he stated it offers another opportunity for people to attend services and pass on the spirit of remembrance. The Returned and Services League (RSL) NSW has also expressed support after consulting its members.
This change is notable as New South Wales traditionally has fewer public holidays than most other mainland Australian states and territories. The Minns government is considering making the Anzac Day long weekend a permanent fixture, pending assessments of the economic and social effects and community feedback.
