Nigeria Villages Attacked: 15 Dead in Reprisal Violence
17 Mar
Summary
- Gunmen killed at least 15 people in two villages in Katsina State.
- The attacks were a reprisal after security forces killed three gunmen.
- Armed groups known as 'bandits' frequently conduct raids and kidnappings.

Gunmen carried out deadly assaults on two villages in northwestern Nigeria on Tuesday, resulting in at least 15 fatalities. The targeted communities, Falale and Kadobe in the Jibia area of Katsina State, were attacked in the early afternoon.
Authorities stated that the violence was a reprisal attack. Local security forces had previously engaged in a firefight, killing three gunmen. In retaliation, the armed group launched the assault on the villages.
Order has since been restored by security forces, who are investigating the incidents. While no group has claimed responsibility, such attacks are frequently attributed to armed groups known as 'bandits' who operate in northwestern and north-central Nigeria.
These bandit groups are often comprised of former herders who have resorted to violence against farming communities following resource-related disputes. Nigeria is also contending with insurgencies from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, primarily in the northeast.
