NATO Bolsters Turkey's Defenses Against Iran

Summary
- A second Patriot missile defense system is deployed to Turkey.
- The deployment aims to counter threats from Iran.
- NATO air defense systems intercepted Iranian missiles recently.

NATO has deployed a second Patriot missile defense system to Turkey's Incirlik Air Base to strengthen the alliance's air defenses against threats originating from Iran. This new system will be stationed alongside the Spanish Patriot system already present at the base. The deployment comes after NATO air-defense systems in the eastern Mediterranean intercepted three missiles launched from Iran toward Turkish airspace since March 4. These incidents are believed to be probes testing the alliance's response capabilities.
This advanced PAC-3 battery deployment, originating from NATO Allied Air Command in Germany, is intended to provide enhanced protection. The existing Spanish battery is a PAC-2 model, primarily designed for aircraft and cruise missiles, potentially lacking efficacy against ballistic missiles. NATO had previously deployed a PAC-3 battery to eastern Turkey to safeguard an AN/TPY-2 early-warning radar system, which may have been a target of the recent projectile launches. Incirlik Air Base's strategic location near the Ceyhan oil terminal also makes it a critical point of defense against potential Iranian disruptions to global energy markets.
