Summary
- Drone-delivered gel speeds natural healing and fights infection.
- NanoSALV treatment aids soldiers and civilians on Ukraine's front lines.
- Canadian technology offers critical time for battlefield wound care.

An innovative wound and burn treatment, NanoSALV, initially supported by Canada's Department of National Defence, is now being deployed in Ukraine. Developed by Calgary-based NanoTess and approved by Health Canada in 2022, the NanoSALV gel is delivered via drone to aid wounded soldiers and civilians in the conflict zone. "We actually started this company with a grant from National Defence back in 2020 and then have had it come full circle here in 2026 to now be used in the front lines within Ukraine," stated NanoTess CEO Megan Leslie.
The NanoSALV catalyst is suspended in a lightweight, non-flammable gel, applied directly to wounds. Since becoming available on the Ukrainian front lines in June 2026, it has treated approximately 6,000 individuals. The nanomaterial-based gel accelerates natural healing, reduces energy requirements for the body, and fights infection-causing microorganisms.
Clinical pharmacist Hailie Uren highlighted the treatment's significance in battlefield scenarios, noting it allows wounds to heal even with limited nursing staff. Demand for the gel is high, with healthcare professionals actively seeking opportunities to use it. The technology can also alleviate strain during mass casualty events, assisting in faster patient recovery and hospital discharge.
