Subramani Appointed Third Chief of Defence Staff

Lieutenant General N.S. Subramani is slated to assume the position of the third Chief of Defence Staff on June 1. This appointment follows his service as the 47th Vice Chief of Army Staff, a role he held until July 2025.

Since retiring, Lt Gen Subramani has been engaged as a military advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat starting September. His extensive career, spanning nearly four decades, includes significant leadership roles such as commanding the II Corps and the 17 Mountain Division.

Subramani's academic background is robust, with advanced degrees in Defence Studies from Madras University and King's College, London. He is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, underscoring his comprehensive military training and education.

Throughout his service, he has gained operational experience in varied conflict zones and terrains. His prior appointments include commanding a battalion in Assam, serving as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, and holding key staff positions at Army headquarters and Eastern Command. He also served in Jammu and Kashmir, gaining crucial insights into northern border dynamics.

Prior to his role as Vice Chief of Army Staff, which he took up on July 1, 2024, Lt Gen Subramani commanded the Central Command and held the position of Chief of Staff at the Northern Command. His career highlights demonstrate a deep understanding of operational dynamics on India's eastern and northern borders.
