Captain Amit Bhardwaj penned a touching letter to his mother around Diwali, assuring her he would be home for the next festival. This promise, however, remained unfulfilled as he tragically lost his life during the 1999 Kargil War. His sacrifice occurred in May 1999 while leading a patrol in the Kaksar sector, searching for a missing team. Captain Bhardwaj, born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, served with the 4 JAT Battalion. His body was recovered 56 days after his martyrdom and brought home on July 15, 1999, draped in the Indian flag.
His memory is kept alive through the Shaheed Amit Bhardwaj Memorial Charitable Trust, established by his family. Further honoring his bravery, Kaksar Bridge was renamed Captain Amit Bhardwaj Setu in October 2024. This renaming ceremony, attended by his sister, also saw the inauguration of a dedicated memorial. Captain Bhardwaj's story highlights the deep personal sacrifices made by soldiers and the enduring impact on their families, particularly during times of celebration like Diwali.
