Army Fitness Evolved: Combined Test for Consistent Performance
21 Dec
Summary
- Indian Army to merge two quarterly physical tests into one.
- New combined test to be conducted twice annually starting 2026.
- Agniveers and officers will undergo the new fitness evaluation.

Starting April 1, 2026, the Indian Army will implement a restructured physical evaluation system, consolidating the BPET and PPT into a single Combined Physical Test conducted semi-annually. This strategic shift aims to prioritize consistent fitness over frequent testing, allowing personnel more time for other activities. The initial trial phase for these changes is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026, following a proposal by Army headquarters in October.
The Combined Physical Test will incorporate key exercises such as a 3.2-km run and rope climbing for individuals under 45, performed with personal load and weapons. For those over 45, the test will be adapted to include a run or walk without loads, alongside push-ups and sit-ups, with specific modifications for age groups up to 60. Grading will range from satisfactory to super excellent, based on a maximum of 60 marks.
Minor adjustments will be made for women personnel, offering slightly longer timings for the run and different parameters for exercises like push-ups and rope climbing to achieve equivalent grades. Additionally, speed marches of 15 km or 25 km with battle loads will be conducted as group activities. This overhaul is expected to make testing procedures more relevant, practical, and inclusive.
