This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Spider T, a vessel launched in February 1926 from New Holland's Warren Shipyard. Originally a goods transport, the super sloop became vital during World War II, assisting in the evacuation of women and children from Hull amidst over 80 Luftwaffe bombing raids.
Mal Nicholson, who restored the Spider T, highlighted its importance in moving people to safety. The boat transported evacuees from Hull to areas including Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, significantly impacting lives during the conflict. Nicholson is now appealing for personal accounts from evacuees or their descendants to honor the boat's legacy.
Commemorations will include a dedicated weekend event at Hull Marina on April 18-19. This celebration will not only recognize the boat's 100 years but also pay tribute to the craftsmanship of the Warren Shipyard and the resilience of those who relied on the Spider T during the war.
