Tanker Crosses Hormuz Strait Amid Tensions
16 Mar
Summary
- Aframax tanker Karachi successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz.
- This marks the first non-Iranian cargo to use the chokepoint since disruptions.
- The Strait of Hormuz is critical for one-fifth of global oil and LNG exports.

The Aframax tanker Karachi, laden with Abu Dhabi's Das crude, has successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. This vessel is noted as the first non-Iranian cargo to transit the strategic chokepoint while actively broadcasting its AIS signal, indicating a potential for negotiated safe passage for select shipments.
The Pakistani-flagged oil tanker's passage through the strait, a critical route for global energy exports, occurred after weeks of significantly reduced traffic. In normal times, approximately one-fifth of global oil production and liquefied natural gas traverses this waterway.
Tehran has previously targeted the strait in retaliation for Israeli-US actions, aiming to impact the global economy. Recent maritime data indicates a significant increase in vessels, predominantly from the "shadow fleet," passing through Hormuz since late February, alongside reports of attacks and incidents in the region.
