In Gaza's al-Amal camp, women are finding a crucial respite from the daily devastations of war. Ola Saleh, a mother of five, attends daily sessions at a women-only safe space, a program run by Collective Development Projects. Here, women receive psychological support, group discussions, and practical advice for coping with the immense pressures they face.
Since October 2023, an estimated 16,000 women in Gaza have lost their husbands, leaving many as the sole providers for their families. These safe spaces, like the one at al-Farah School, aim to give women a secure environment to express their grief and trauma. Attendance has rapidly grown, with women reporting that these sessions help them feel acknowledged and less isolated.
Older participants, like 63-year-old Suad al-Gharabali, share their experiences and offer advice to younger mothers. The initiative recognizes the significant responsibilities women have shouldered, providing them with a sense of validation and a much-needed dose of hope. The program plans to expand across displacement sites in the Strip.
