A veteran of the Falklands conflict has urged the public never to forget those who lost their lives during the war. Keith Thompson, who served as an assistant purser on the troop ship MV Norland, shared his memories of the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina. The MV Norland was one of nine vessels from Hull involved in the war.
A special service dedicated to the city's servicemen and women who participated in the war was recently held in Pickering Park. Thompson highlighted the significance of such events, stating, "it must be done so we don't forget these people who sadly passed away, but we're keeping their memory going on."
The invasion resulted in the deaths of 255 British servicemen, three islanders, and 649 Argentinian personnel. Thompson, then 32, volunteered to help transport soldiers to the South Atlantic. He recalled moments of peril, including when ships came under attack and the HMS Antelope was hit and exploded near his vessel.
