Boko Haram Assault: Army Base Overrun in Borno
15 Oct
Summary
- At least 10 soldiers were killed in the attack.
- Militants seized over 40 fishing boats before the base raid.
- Insurgency has intensified despite years of military operations.
Suspected Boko Haram fighters launched a coordinated assault on an army base in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 soldiers and wounding over 20 others. The militants successfully overran the base in the Guzamala local government area, destroying military vehicles and setting parts of the nearby Mairari village ablaze.
Prior to the attack on the military base, the fighters seized more than 40 fishing boats from Tumbun Barebari, a lakeside village. Fishermen reported that the raids were simultaneous, but they themselves were unharmed.
These recent attacks underscore a recent intensification of violence by Islamist groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, despite extensive military operations aimed at curbing the 17-year insurgency in northeastern Nigeria. Last week, Nigerian troops repelled an ISWAP attack, killing over 25 fighters.
