Baltic Power Grid Hardens Against Russian Drone Attacks

Lithuania is implementing robust defenses at the future Gizai power substation, located approximately 30 km west of Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. This crucial infrastructure, part of the Harmony Link connecting the Baltic states to western Europe, is being fortified against potential military drone attacks and hybrid threats. The security enhancements include fencing designed to withstand truck bomb impacts, sensors to detect hostile tunneling, and reinforced concrete structures for transformers to survive drone strikes.

These unprecedented security measures reflect a shift in grid design philosophy, moving from planning for natural disasters to preparing for hybrid warfare. The substation's location within the Suwalki Gap, a strategically sensitive area between Russia and Belarus, has long been a security concern for NATO. The decision to reinforce the Gizai substation is directly linked to rising regional tensions and recent sabotage incidents against European energy infrastructure.

The substation will feature redundant critical equipment and custom-made concrete to withstand direct impacts from explosive-laden drones like the Shahed model. Lithuania's military is actively advising on these physical security upgrades. The project's estimated cost has increased by at least €48 million due to these security requirements, prompting Lithuania to request significant EU financial contribution.
