Yesterday, an explosion tore through the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) headquarters in Baghdad, causing fatalities and injuries. The blast, which occurred on October 17th, claimed the life of one PMF member and left four others wounded, according to security and medical sources.
The PMF, known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi, is a significant umbrella group comprising mostly Shi'ite paramilitary factions. These groups have been formally integrated into Iraq's state security apparatus and include several factions aligned with Iran.
Initial reports from the group indicate that the explosion stemmed from a stockpile of obsolete ammunition. The incident also triggered a fire, which has since been successfully brought under control by emergency services.
