- The memorial honors soldiers from the town who fell in World Wars One and Two.
Axbridge commemorated the 100th anniversary of its war memorial's dedication with a heartfelt unveiling ceremony last Saturday afternoon. The memorial, a 12ft 6in Celtic cross originally commissioned for £150 in 1926, now honors the town's soldiers lost in World War One and World War Two.
In a touching echo of the past, two children again participated in the unveiling, pulling away a union flag. This mirrored the original dedication in 1926, when Victor Lintern and Francis Land, whose fathers died in World War One, first revealed the monument.
Relatives of those connected to the memorial were present. Janet Davies, daughter of Francis Land, shared that learning of her father's role in the original dedication was a recent discovery, highlighting how such events were rarely discussed by the previous generation. Elaine Gilmore received a photograph of her great uncle, Archibald Arthur James, whose name is on the memorial, remarking on the emotional impact of seeing his image and connecting with the town's past.
