Australians Face Travel Chaos Amidst Airspace Closures
2 Mar
Summary
- Middle Eastern airspace closures cause widespread flight disruptions globally.
- Australian minister warns of limits to government aid for stranded citizens.
- Major airlines suspend operations, impacting thousands of Australian travellers.

Australians are being advised to prepare for significant travel disruptions globally as conflict in the Middle East leads to widespread airspace closures. Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that while the government prioritizes the safety of its citizens, there are limitations to the assistance that can be provided in such a rapidly evolving situation. Many Australians with travel plans or family in the region will be affected by these turmoil.
The closure of airspace by countries involved in the conflict, including the shuttering of major hubs in Qatar, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, has grounded numerous flights. Major carriers like Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways have suspended operations, offering passengers rebooking or refund options. Flight data confirmed a lack of commercial aircraft over the UAE and Qatar. Virgin Australia, partners with Qatar Airways, urged passengers to monitor flight information and consult Smartraveller.
Approximately 115,000 Australians are in the region, with about 11,000 regularly using affected airlines. Minister Wong indicated that repatriation flights are not yet being considered, as the resumption of commercial flights is seen as the quickest way for citizens to return home. She noted that flights, whether commercial or Australian, cannot operate while airspace remains closed due to ongoing conflict and safety concerns.
