Never Forget: Traditions Honor 9/11 Fallen Firefighters

For two decades, a powerful tradition has unfolded along Highway 10 in Minnesota, ensuring the sacrifices of September 11, 2001, are never forgotten. Firefighters and community members gather annually to honor the 343 firefighters who perished on that tragic day. This year, as on previous occasions, the sounds of horns mingled with the wind as a symbol of solidarity and remembrance.

Daniel Hanson initiated the tradition 20 years ago, driven by a concern that the memory of 9/11 was beginning to fade. Initially a small group of volunteers holding flags, the observance has grown to include the Coon Rapids Fire Department and displays of massive flags between fire trucks. Firefighter Adam Gordon, whose family had ties to the fire service in New York, drew inspiration from the events of 9/11 to join the profession.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including high winds and past injuries, participants like Hanson remain steadfast. Gordon, who grew up in central New York, was inspired to become a firefighter after 9/11, a sentiment shared by many who felt compelled to serve in the wake of the attacks. The annual observance serves as a vital educational moment for younger generations, ensuring they understand the profound importance of the date in American history.
