San Francisco police are investigating an incident where a Zoox autonomous vehicle collided with a parked car. The crash occurred on January 17 near 15th and Mission Streets. The Zoox robotaxi struck the driver's side door of a 1977 Cadillac Coupe DeVille after the door was unexpectedly opened into its path.
The driver of the parked vehicle reportedly suffered hand injuries. The Zoox vehicle, which was carrying an employee at the time, sustained damage to its doors. The passenger, a Zoox employee, was confirmed to be uninjured by the police department. Zoox is cooperating with local authorities and has filed its own report.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles is also reviewing the crash report filed by Zoox, which is a requirement under state regulations. Zoox has been in the early stages of deploying its robotaxi service in San Francisco, with a recall issued in December for unrelated lane-crossing issues. The company stated the robotaxi attempted to avoid the opening door but contact was unavoidable.
