Zoox Robotaxis Recall: Software Bug Puts Taxis in Wrong Lane
24 Dec
Summary
- Zoox recalled 332 robotaxis due to a software bug affecting automated driving.
- The bug caused vehicles to unnecessarily enter oncoming lanes during turns.
- The recall addresses 63 instances of lane deviation without any collisions.

Amazon's autonomous driving service, Zoox, has initiated a voluntary software recall affecting 332 of its robotaxis. The recall addresses a critical bug within the automated driving system that caused vehicles to deviate into oncoming lanes. This issue was first observed on August 26 when a Zoox vehicle made an unusual turn and entered an opposing lane before stopping.
Further monitoring revealed 63 instances of partial or full lane deviations by December 5, attributed to various factors like misidentified double-parked vehicles and navigation adjustments. Although no collisions occurred, the company acknowledged the increased risk. Software updates were deployed on November 7 and again between December 8 and December 18 for all vehicles operating from March 13 to December 18.
The remedy has been fully implemented for all impacted vehicles as of December 19, 2025, completing the recall. Zoox, which owns and operates its fleet, managed the recall internally without involving dealers. The service, still offering free public trials in Las Vegas and San Francisco, prepares for future commercial rides, standing as a competitor to Google's Waymo.
