Summary
- Smart contact lenses offer potential for gaming and health monitoring.
- Xpanceo plans a consumer prototype by 2027.
- Powering and processing remain challenges for standalone lenses.

Xpanceo has unveiled next-generation smart contact lenses, showcasing capabilities like playing Tetris directly on the eyeball at Mobile World Congress 2026. The company is pursuing multiple applications, including a consumer-focused version combining on-lens displays with 24/7 blood glucose monitoring. This device aims for in-eye comfort and plans for a working prototype by 2027.
Initially, Xpanceo's lenses will rely on a companion over-the-ear device for power and computational processing, with a small built-in battery for basic functions. Future plans involve self-powering technologies such as harvesting body heat or solar energy. Companion helmet-like accessories are also being developed for specialized users like athletes and astronauts.
Beyond consumer uses, Xpanceo is developing medical applications. These include smart contacts for early glaucoma detection and lenses to precisely monitor medication levels in a patient's system, potentially aiding treatments for conditions like cancer.
