X Lets You Trade Stocks Directly From Timeline

X, the social media platform now owned by Elon Musk, has introduced a significant new financial trading feature for its U.S. users. Launched recently, the Cashtag functionality enables individuals to place stock trades directly from their timelines through participating brokerages.

This integration leverages the long-standing practice of users discussing financial assets on X. The feature allows ticker symbols for stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies, when preceded by a dollar sign (Cashtags), to become interactive trading points. Users tapping on a supported Cashtag can view live charts, related discussions, and initiate trades with partner firms.

Initial partners facilitating these trades include prominent names such as Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase. X envisions this as a way to connect financial conversations directly to action, enabling users to move seamlessly from discovery and discussion to brokerage services without interruption.

While the feature offers convenience, it also raises concerns about potential market manipulation through bots and spammers. However, proponents argue that such issues already exist on the platform. The introduction of X Money and this trading capability marks a significant expansion for the social network into the financial services space.
