Summary
- Wollongong trials cameras to monitor parking zones electronically.
- New system replaces manual tyre chalking with number plate scanning.
- Trial covers key areas including CBD, Blue Mile, and near UOW.

Wollongong City Council has commenced a 12-month trial of an electronic system to monitor timed parking zones. Starting in February, cameras mounted on council vehicles will scan vehicle number plates to enforce parking regulations, marking a shift from the previous manual method of chalking tyres.
The trial encompasses all timed parking areas across Wollongong, Keiraville, Gwynneville, and parts of Fairy Meadow and North Wollongong. High-traffic locations such as the Blue Mile, CBD car parks, and streets surrounding the University of Wollongong are included in the surveillance.
This move aligns Wollongong with over 20 other New South Wales councils that have already adopted similar camera technology. The council aims to address resident frustrations with parking availability and ensure equitable access to prime parking spots.
