Microsoft Revamps Windows Insider Testing Channels
11 Apr
Summary
- Windows Insider Program to merge Canary and Dev channels.
- New 'Experimental' channel for early feature testing.
- Beta channel offers a more stable testing experience.

Microsoft has announced a significant restructuring of its Windows Insider Program, aiming to enhance quality and incorporate user feedback. The company is simplifying its testing channels, a move that follows a commitment to improving Windows quality.
The previous four-tier system, including Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview channels, is being consolidated. The new structure will feature an 'Experimental' channel, merging the former Canary and Dev channels. This Experimental channel is designated for the earliest introduction of new features, where user feedback will have the most direct influence on development.
A revamped 'Beta' channel will offer a more stable testing environment, suitable for users who prefer features closer to their final release. Both the Experimental and Beta channels will provide options for users to select specific baseline versions of Windows they wish to test, including specialized builds for Arm-based PCs and standard versions.
Additionally, the Experimental channel will include a 'Future Platforms' option. This allows testers to access the earliest preview builds for Windows, which are not tied to a specific retail version. This feature is for individuals keen on testing potential future iterations of the operating system.
