14 Jul
Summary
- Windows 11 search menu is being tested without ads.
- Search homescreen will now show only recent searches.
- Improved search handles typos and partial words better.

Microsoft is actively testing a redesigned Windows 11 search experience, prioritizing a cleaner interface free from recommended content and advertisements. This initiative is part of a broader effort to rebuild user confidence in the Windows operating system.
The revamped search homescreen will exclusively display users' recent searches, departing from the current layout that includes distracting tiles and sponsored content. Web search results are also being refined to present the most pertinent answer first, rather than promoting related products or commercial offers.
Further enhancements include clearer metadata presentation and file previews, aiding users in identifying result origins. The system will now prioritize local file, app, and setting results over web and Microsoft Store suggestions. Users can also opt to disable these recommendations entirely through the Settings menu.
In addition to decluttering, the pilot program introduces significant quality-of-life improvements. The search functionality has been optimized to better manage typos, extraneous letters, and partial word inputs, alongside general performance boosts.
